Apple’s patent for GPU Power Control.

No: 20110267359 is the new patent number from Apple for systems for hot plug GPU power control. This is the new number appearing on the US patent and Trademark Office. It clearly highlights that Apple is keenly working on managing the graphical processors for Macs and iOS devices.

As per the patent, systems are embedded with an electronic device that has multiple GPUs. They also have a GPU power control process which takes care of the switching between the GPUs. Now this electronic device is connected to an external display with the help of a passive or an active adapter. When connected to an active adapter, the GPU power control process uses hot plug functionality to establish the connection between the external display and the active adapter and also give proper switching response.Let’s have a look at Apple’s background and a little in detail about this invention. Most of the electronic devices consist of a display screen to display the user interfaces. May it be watching a video, or displaying any application. This process of displaying is powered by a GPU processor. This processor drives an internal display and sometimes an external display as well.

Some of the devices may contain more than one GPU where one or the other may drive the external display. In such devices, a manual intervention might be required to switch between the GPUs. But this process completely ruins the exact idea behind GPU’s resource switching capability. Moreover, it not necessary that the user switches the exact GPU for the exact display. An electronic device may contain a primary GPU, a secondary GPU and also a physical storage media. This storage media would detect whether the first GPU is active and switch to it to provide output to the external display if it’s not active. Based on this indication, one or the other GPU always remains active.
