Syncing Plain Text App for iPhone

Speed Notes Is a Dropbox-Syncing Plain Text App for iPhone

iOS: Speed Notes is a plain-text editor for the iPhone that instantly syncs your notes with your Dropbox account for easy note creation and editing on the go or from your computer.

Speed Notes isn't the first cloud-syncing note-taking app for the iPhone by any means, so let's look at the options. Our perennial favorite is Simplenote, which syncs notes to a web-based backend that is the backbone of the Simplenote service. I've been a big Simplenote supporter for a while now, but it does require signing up for a separate service, and chances are you already have Dropbox running on your machine. So how about your Dropbox options. You've got:

  • Previously mentioned Nebulous Notes ($4): This is a kitchen-sink style app. It's full of bells and whistles, letting you choose themes, define macros, and even code from your iPhone. It's solid, but not really my favorite.
  • PlainText (Free): Yes, it's free, but it also places ads over your notes. If you use your note-taking app a lot (which we do), this is a dealbreaker. For a quick $2 in-app purchase, though, you can remove those ads. Looks-wise, I'd call this my favorite of the Dropbox syncers. Functionally, though, it's not.
  • Last, there's Speed Notes. The most likable thing about Speed Notes is that it copies its basic functionality from Notational Velocity (our favorite desktop note-taking app for Mac; copied by previously mentioned ResophNotes for Windows). It has one main input box, and you type into it to search notes or create a new note. You can use it to create and edit notes in any folder in your main Dropbox directory, and everything else works pretty simply and as expected. The main downside to Speed Notes is that it could use a little polish in its look. It's not hideous, but it's clearly not made by a designer. Also, pal-of-Lifehacker and MetaFilter creator Matt Haughey loves Speed Notes.

Whichever you pick will likely be a matter of personal taste, but whether you go for Simplenote or one of your Dropbox-syncing options, I'd highly recommend downloading one of these apps and integrating it into your note-taking and list-making workflows. For a larger explanation of why apps like these are so great, my previous love letter to Simplenote is a good place to start.

If you've got a favorite tool for the job, let's hear about it in the comments.

New study finds Apple Ecosystem helps iPhone lead industry in user retention

A new study finds that iPhone owners are the most loyal smartphone users, and names customers’ personal investments in Apple’s ecosystem as driving an over 80% maintenance rate for the device.

A report released on Friday by research firm GfK on Thursday shows that 84% of existing iPhone owner’s idea to purchase a new apple handset while they replace their handset, as per said thing by many of smartphone users ecosystem of a mobile OS is a defining factor when upgrading, according to Reuters.

As per the study conducted by GfK over 4,500 interviews of smartphone owners in France, Britain, Germany, Spain, China, Italy, Brazil, Japan and U.S outcome that the iPhone had the utmost retention of customers, followed by device running Google's Android OS and RIM's BlackBerry, with 60% and 48% respectively.

Ryan Garner, GfK analyst summaries that an average 63% of defendants plan to replace their current device with one running the same OS, let down the possibility of quick market swing. He goes on to say that the more features and services used by customer in a particular mobile OS environment, the more imbedded the user becomes. Nearly one out of five owners of both an iPad and iPhone believe that switching to another OS is more difficult than changing bank accounts, or gas or electricity providers.

According to 70% of consumer’s reports features and seamless access to content are major factors in staying with their current mobile OS; the push for a value-added ecosystem is becoming a greater priority for the industry.

Apple's iCloud and iTunes are examples of creating an experience that customers not only enjoy, but cite as a reason to stay with the iOS platform due to financial and personal investments.

As per the study respondents cited three main arguments concerning user experience as difficulties to switching devices; 33% being too invested in app and current phone setup to change, 29% requesting for gridlines on how to operate a new device is a detriment and 28% perceives moving digital content from one smartphone to another as too much of a hassle.

However, device simplicity and integration with a digital world of content are not the only factors in choosing to stay with a device. Cross-platform access to already purchased media or apps is also seen as a driving force for some users.
Nearly three quarters (72%) of smartphone owners feel that it is important to access to their digital libraries across multiple platforms, with the figure jumping to 80% for users who also own tablets and PCs. In this case, Apple's walled-in iTunes system becomes a negative aspect to the overall Apple environment as all apps and much of the media purchased through the service can only be used on iOS devices.

China, seen by many as the most important developing mobile market for Apple, places the greatest importance on cross-platform access with 92% of respondents emphasizing the need for media to be compatible across all devices.

A  report suggests there is high demand for the iPhone in China, with the newest iPhone 4S reportedly set to go on sale within two weeks after recently being approved for sale.

Garner notes the sum of the findings, from user experience to cross-platform media access, points to success for the manufacturer or OS developer that can most quickly attract users with a new and easy to use mobile platform.

Apples dual- LED light bars for new generation iPad 3.

Apple is preparing to launch its new generation iPad with much more resolution displays. So the component makers are seriously challenged with the job of designing backlight solutions that give the iPad something extra than the existing brightness on screen. A single LED backlight bar was designed for iPad 2 .But this seems to be insufficient for iPad 3 since Apple is planning for a much better resolution and a strengthened pixel density, the Retina Display.

The LED backlight unit vendors have put forward two important solutions for the existing dilemma. They have also introduced a new design with a single bar factor but with 2 LED chips embedded inside. But Apple is consistently looking for the latter design with 2 LED light bars in iPad3. However the LED BLU (back light unit) makers have rectified the issues with the initial designs and battery utilization. The issues with the higher resolution and backlight design has already put a halt to the schedule of the new iPad 3.  Even now the essential components for the production of iPad3 are arriving at the various manufacturing facilities of Apple. Apple is aiming to start the pre construction of almost 2 million new tablets by December end and to make a launch by March 2012.

Apart from the high resolution display, the new iPad 3 is also aiming to bring in a quad-core A6 processor. Other major changes are believed to be a redesigned dock connector that will reduce the current thickness of the iPad and a thinner and lighter battery pack for better reliability than iPad2. If the Apple sources are to be believed, the company is yet to finalize the design of the upcoming iPad 3. It’s also been reported that the company is working on 2 different projects namely “J1” and “J2” each with a different design specification and technology. The J2 project is considered to be more ambitious than J1 and Apple might soon decide on the final version as to what would suit more for an iPad3.

Apple’s iTV: The Future of Home Entertainment.

Apple’s iTV, one of the impending dreams of Steve Jobs appears to be the lone creation of Apple’s TV product. In his Biography released lately he has mentioned about an “Integrated Television Set “and that he had cracked some major issue with it. Experts and analysts have been predicting the arrival of Apple into the home entertainment field in a big way. But till the real thing happening around, Apple will have to get contented with Apple TV, a set top box, which is modest in functionality. The system hasn’t caught much attention since the marketing done for this particular product was pretty less when compared to the other Apple products. Jobs even referred this one as a “hobby”.
If Apple is seriously looking forward to enter the drawing rooms of consumers through this product, then the aim is going to be awesome. It might give a new view point, different from the cable services being delivered. So the very idea of Apple entering the entertainment media raises a lot of excitement. In the latest iOS launch, Apple raised a new technology called Airplay that included “mirroring” between Apple TV and any iDevice. This technology allows the transfer of information from your mobile device to your television. That would certainly mean that both the devices would be able to interact with each other and would run the same application at a time. Guess the TV options have become vast all of a sudden. Apple is turning the device in your hand into a huge display screen in your room. All the functionalities are already available on the portable devices, then why not try it on a larger display?
If Apple succeeds in doing so, it will completely change the dimension of the home entertainment media. Now you can have the channels tuned to your interest without having to skip through the numerous channels to get something of your interest.
