Syncing Plain Text App for iPhone

Speed Notes Is a Dropbox-Syncing Plain Text App for iPhone

iOS: Speed Notes is a plain-text editor for the iPhone that instantly syncs your notes with your Dropbox account for easy note creation and editing on the go or from your computer.

Speed Notes isn't the first cloud-syncing note-taking app for the iPhone by any means, so let's look at the options. Our perennial favorite is Simplenote, which syncs notes to a web-based backend that is the backbone of the Simplenote service. I've been a big Simplenote supporter for a while now, but it does require signing up for a separate service, and chances are you already have Dropbox running on your machine. So how about your Dropbox options. You've got:

  • Previously mentioned Nebulous Notes ($4): This is a kitchen-sink style app. It's full of bells and whistles, letting you choose themes, define macros, and even code from your iPhone. It's solid, but not really my favorite.
  • PlainText (Free): Yes, it's free, but it also places ads over your notes. If you use your note-taking app a lot (which we do), this is a dealbreaker. For a quick $2 in-app purchase, though, you can remove those ads. Looks-wise, I'd call this my favorite of the Dropbox syncers. Functionally, though, it's not.
  • Last, there's Speed Notes. The most likable thing about Speed Notes is that it copies its basic functionality from Notational Velocity (our favorite desktop note-taking app for Mac; copied by previously mentioned ResophNotes for Windows). It has one main input box, and you type into it to search notes or create a new note. You can use it to create and edit notes in any folder in your main Dropbox directory, and everything else works pretty simply and as expected. The main downside to Speed Notes is that it could use a little polish in its look. It's not hideous, but it's clearly not made by a designer. Also, pal-of-Lifehacker and MetaFilter creator Matt Haughey loves Speed Notes.

Whichever you pick will likely be a matter of personal taste, but whether you go for Simplenote or one of your Dropbox-syncing options, I'd highly recommend downloading one of these apps and integrating it into your note-taking and list-making workflows. For a larger explanation of why apps like these are so great, my previous love letter to Simplenote is a good place to start.

If you've got a favorite tool for the job, let's hear about it in the comments.

Siri’s Speak Selection Feature Reads Text Out Loud

Here’s a nice little tip for Siri fanatics. Did you know that you can have Siri speak any selection of text out loud anywhere in iOS 5 on the iPhone 4S?

By enabling a nifty feature in Settings, a simple “Speak” option can be shown any time you select a chunk of text. Siri can then read that text out loud through your iPhone’s speaker at a pre-programmed speed.

If you navigate to Settings, General, Accessibility, and then Speak Selection, you can enable the Siri feature on iOS 5. Once you turn the setting on, you can set the speed that you want Siri to read text back to you.

Siri will give you a test reading very time you move the slider to change the speed. This will let you determine which speed is best for you. I find that placing the slider at about the 20% mark is the best setting for having Siri read back to you at a normal pace. Make sure your iPhone’s speaker volume is turned up high enough so that you can actually hear when Siri reads.

This is a great tip for reading messages in the car or listening to longer emails. Let us know what you use it for in the comments below!

Apple pulls iTether App for iPhone (Updated with statements by developers)

UPDATE [Tuesday, November 29, 2011]: iTether app development team published a blog post offering their side of the story.

It was great while it lasted, but iTether is absent from the App Store now. Unluckily, seems the combined effects of the hype and excitement, likely coupled with iTether’s workaround of some of the App Store limitations, may have motivated Apple enough to pull them from the store. Yesterday just after the arrival of iTether Apple fans, primarily power users who criticized Apple on their strict rules and previous exclusions of tethering programs like Netshare.

Even well, appreciations like this one make us wonder how such apps ever make it into the Apple Store in the top position. Apparently, the net connection sharing works in lot of places outside the United States, so the U. S readers are more interested in program to use their iPhone’s cellular data on their systems with no extra carrier fees.

The Tether.com web site was down at press time. Canada-based developers yesterday tweeted on twitter that Apple took no issue with the program. “We were very clear with Apple what our app did. They asked us a bunch of questions and then approved us”, the team wrote. The original iTunes link  is no longer exist so you will have to look somewhere else. If history is an indication, it won’t be long before iTether hits the Cydia store. Did you manage to download a copy yourself? Hit us in comments.

Developers posted a statement on their blog, included right below the fold. We’ve also received a tip that it is still possible to download iTether through Installous on a jailbroken iPhone.

Leaked Photos shows Brazil-made 8 GB iPhone 4 with custom model number

A set of newly leaked photos depicts an 8GB iPhone 4 made by Foxconn in Brazil and allegedly bearing a localized model number.

While the 8 GB iPhone 4 is not expected to go on sale in Brazil until the arrival of iPhone 4S in the country, MacMagazine.br has suspected early photos of the device from a reader. At the back of handset as we see the words “Brazilian Industry” in Portuguese, as well as the stamp of approval from ANATEL, Brazil’s telecommunication agency.

Apparently the iPhone 4 came with iOS 5.0 installed and carries a model number, which ends with “BR”, probably it indicated the device was manufactured in Brazil. The disclosure comes at last month’s release of factory documentation for an 8 GB iPhone 4 allegedly from Foxconn’s services in Brazil. Soon after the expose, Apple announced that the 8 GB iPhone 4 beside the iPhone 4S.

The Foxconn, apple’s manufacturing partner is said to be seeing an investment as large as $12 billion on production services in Brazil.  But, the report we got at September it was clear that the negotiation between the company and the government have stalled due to disparities over tax rates, ad hoc infrastructure and the absence of qualified workers.

The minister Brazil for Science, Technology and innovation, had already said that the first iPad formed by Foxconn in the country would arrive in December.  A "reliable source" told MacMagazine.br that "Made in Brazil" 8GB iPhone 4 units are also expected to hit the local market in December. Distribution will reportedly start in Sao Paulo, Brasilia and other major capitals first before gradually expanding to other cities in the country.

Localized Foxconn production of Apple products in Brazil may help the company circumvent sizable tariffs on imported electronics. After tax, some of Apple's devices in Brazil cost more than double their original retail price.

If the company's products arrived on the Brazilian market without import taxes, Apple's sales in the country could see rapid growth. Apple revealed last quarter that sales in Brazil had jumped up 118 percent year over year to pass the $900 million mark.

AT&T Rises Subsidized iPhone 3GS Price to 99 Cents

After making the iPhone 3GS free with convention last month, AT & T has now raised the price of their cheapest smartphone to $0.99

Last month, during the announcement of iPhone 4S, Apple clear mentioned in their press release that the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS available for free, that was just a momentary drop on the two years old phone, AT & T has now bumped up that price to $0.99

Still the iPhone 3Gs is available at a reasonable price and surely this remains one of the finest deals for leading smartphone, said by AT & T spokesman.

Being the second largest wireless importer in the US, has been the high-class seller of the iPhone 3GS since its launch in 2009. Even after 2 years its launch on industry sales of the smartphone has incredible surprise in its brisk. As per report we got from the NPD Group, the iPhone 3GS was been the second best-selling smartphone in US in the third quarter of this year.

The reason of AT & T minor price hike remained unclear. For its part, Apple continues to offer the iPhone 3GS, sponsored on AT & T’s network, for $0.00 on the Apple Online Store.

Few Facts about iPhone 4S Battery Life.

The all new iPhone 4S is indeed an amazing invention by Apple. The dual-processor A5 chip and the most awaited SIRI app have added to the glory. But now the only one drawback that has been noticed lately is that the battery backup doesn’t come to the expectations of the customers. The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS had a battery backup time of 300 hrs. But there’s been a gradual decrease in the battery lifetime with the release of iPhone 4S.

Experts believe that there might be 2 important reasons behind the swift battery consumption of iPhone 4S. One is the fact that it’s been blessed with a dual-processor A5 chip that happens to be a strong contender for grasping more power. The second one is the introduction of the SIRI app that’s a kind of new app to the smart world. No one can actually predict the impact of such an app on the battery life of an iPhone 4S. So it’s doubtfully another reason for the drain out of power backup. According to Schiller, an essential part of Apple, with such a powerful processor inside a super thin phone, what you expect of course compromising on the battery lifetime.

Though the issue of the poor battery lifetime still persists, no major reforms have been made in this field by Apple thus posing a threat on the brand royalty and of course the release of iPhone 5 by next year.

Is SIRI creating a Security threat to iPhone 4S?

SIRI of course offers you a smart and intelligent way to interact with your iPhone. It’s one of the advanced features that recognizes your speech and responds in a friendly manner. Well battery power is not the only thing here that’s getting sacrificed for using this elegant feature. Questions are actually raising eyebrows as to how safe can your iPhone be, through such an application?

It’s been noticed that SIRI is capable of accessing a whole lot of functions from your iPhone without even entering the passcode. Reports indicate that SIRI has been changing calendar appointments, writing text messages and sending emails without even entering the passcode that adds the security for your iPhone. But Apple is a bit concerned about the issue and has already come up with the solution through iOS 5. So now make sure that SIRI doesn’t entertain a stranger or doesn’t accept his voice commands instead of yours. Just follow these basic steps to restrain the unauthorized access.

Navigate to Settings > General > Passcode Lock> SIRI > OFF. This will make your smart app completely available to you. By default, SIRI is enabled in your iPhone even if you set a passcode lock. Unless and until the settings are changed to switch off SIRI, an external access is very much possible.

Well, the reality lies with Apple whether why such a problem remained unnoticed. For those who give extreme importance to the security issues, this remedy must be of great relief.

What is iCloud?

iCloud is the much hyped, sensational app of the all new iPhone 4S. It stores your photos, videos, documents and much more and lets you wirelessly push them to all your devices automatically and effortlessly. This makes it amazingly easy to access just everything on your devices that you use every day. iCloud automatically stores your content so that it’s always available to your iPhone, iPod, iPad, Mac or PC. It even keeps all your data, emails, contacts and calendars up to date without the need of any kind of synchronization or management.

iCloud also gets you 5GB of free storage once you sign up for iCloud. If you feel that the storage is not sufficient, you can even purchase a storage upgrade straight from your device. iCloud has applied itself to every new Apple device and the initial set up process is also very simple. When you update your iPhone, iPad, iPod, to iOS5 it gets integrated with iCloud. This makes your content available anywhere no matter which device you are using. The basic steps in setting up an iCloud are:

  • Make sure that you have a device that runs on iOS 5
  • Turn on iCloud.
  • Customize your settings by tapping on the settings icon and select iCloud.
  • Enable automatic downloads by tapping on the store option on the settings on home screen.

iCloud is believed to be the latest and the most innovative features that have come up in recent times on an iPhone. Transferring data has not been this easy with any smart phone.

What is iOS 5 meant for Apple Gadgets?

A new Apple’s Operating system iOS 5 is ready to install in Apple Gadgets like iPad versions, third and fourth gen iPod, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. It has the ability to sync with iTunes over on Wi-Fi connection instead of USB. Since it’s one more new feature is software updates over the air. It is the biggest leap in OS technology since the appearance of iPhone. iOS 5 is flanked by 200 new features and applications. Some of among new features are advanced notification centre, twitter integration. It also has fluid messaging technology that connects all Apple handheld devices.
Newsstand, iMessages and reminders are the three features about iOS 5; iMessages is the helpful feature which users to send photos, unlimited texts, email to others who use it as well.
It has been noted that Apple has made it possible for customers to bypass carriers' text messaging services using this feature for free over Wi-Fi; though on 3G networks a cost for data usage would be incurred.
Newsstand is designed like a shelf which users could save the subscriptions of newspaper, magazine and book. Reminders feature is perceived more like a "companion app for Calendar".

Yellow Tints on iPhone 4S Turning Users Red

The yellow tint has actually become a big stain on the popularity of iPhone 4S. Apple has lately started getting complaints about the iPhone 4S screens that tend to reflect a yellowish screen. This malfunctioning might bring forward a major dropdown in the iPhone 4S sales.

The previous versions i.e. the iPhone 4 and iPad 2, both had encountered the same problems with their displays. This seemed to have come because of the adhesive. Those problems cleared up in a week and so the current iPhone 4S users are also waiting for the same to happen.

But it seems the previous issue was a bit moderate since the screen displayed only yellow colored small spots. This time the tint is covering almost the entire area of the display. The crisis has already been named as “Yellow Gate”. The Cupertino, Calif – based tech company has not come up with any comments nor has it suggested any solution for this crisis. This indicates that it might in future become an unattended issue. The commonly noted point is that the issue mainly remains with the black 4S model rather than the white one leading analysts to believe that the black phones are tricking the screens to compensate for the darker surroundings.

Some users even feel that the iPhone 4S color display is a bit washed out compared to the previous version. With more and more people watching videos and photos on the new iPhone, the clarity issue might lead them turn their faces. The iPhone 4S is indeed a much hyped about phone but competition is seriously gonna shoot up with 2 more majors, Motorola and Samsung Nexus launching their phones.

If the issue sustains, it might keep the users rush towards the rivals, especially users who give importance to the physical appearance. No matter whether the issue gets addressed by Apple or resolved by them, the customers who have already purchased the phone need something to get it fixed.

Airport Utility App & Find My Friends App of iPhone

Much ahead of the release of iOS 5, two more applications related to it were launched. One is the Airport utility app and the other one being the Find my friends app. First of all let’s get introduced with the Find my friends app. It’s a simple app that lets you track down your friends and family just with the touch on your iPhone, iPad or iPod device. All you have to do is to install this free app on your device that’s using the iOS 5 and sign in with the Apple ID that you use with iCloud. Now just add a friend and send a request to see the location where he is put up. Once your friend accepts your request through this app, you can easily find the location through a map or on a list.

Find my friends app is targeted for all the iDevices using the latest Apple release, the iOS 5 which includes iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, 3rd- and 4th-generation iPod touch, the iPad and iPad 2.This app doesn’t work without the iOS 5 which is an essential requirement.

Talking about the second app, that is the Airport utility app, helps users to manage AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and Time Capsule base stations. You can even manage your Wi-Fi network right from your iDevice running the iOS 5.It gives you a graphical overview of the Wi-Fi networks and devices. Airport utility app works with all the Apple 802.11n Wi-Fi base stations and Airport Express and Time Capsule. This app was initially made to be used only with devices supporting iOS 5 but now there are plans to make it a standalone app as all the iOS device users might not have Apple’s basestations.
