iPhone 4S – Turning point for Russia’s Glonass Navigation System

The new iPhone 4S has incorporated in itself Russia’s new GPS known as the Glonass Global navigation system. Glonass is the Russian version of the GPS navigation system. Giving importance to the national interest, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin supported the possibility of putting a ban on mobile devices that lack the new Glonass chipsets.
Last week iPhone 4S was launched in US, UK, Japan, Germany and France  and it is all set to hit the Russian stores very soon. According to a market research firm J’son & Partners Consulting, a handset that highlights Glonass is an indicator of the latest trend. Major chip producers like Qualcomm Inc , Samsung Electronics and Texas instruments declared that they would make chipset that supports Glonass all over the world and not just in Russia.
This indicates that the phone sets that will be launched later this year will support this feature. The very reason why this initiative was taken is to support the chip makers who have started struggling to come with new features for their chips.
Currently only 2 handsets supporting GPS are sold in Russia. One is the Mobile TeleSystems, sold for RUB10, 990 ($352) and Samsung’s Omnia W. Mobile TeleSystems recently made an announcement that its Glonass handsets were sold out and the company is seeing its future in expanding its range of Glonass phones with the vendors.
